Labor Day Is Always A Bittersweet Time For Me

I hope everyone is enjoying a great end of the summer. Labor Day is always a bitter sweet time for me. It is a great opportunity to reflect on the amazing contributions our labor organizations have made to our country. It is heartwarming to see our firefighters standing on our roads with their boots collecting money for muscular dystrophy, and a wonderful time for families and friends to gather at picnics and barbecues.

Labor Day weekend is also a great weekend to reflect on the importance of providing all of our students opportunities to pursue careers along multiple pathways, college, public service, military, apprenticeships and more.

As a retired international business executive and a small business owner, I know that a person may change careers and/or jobs multiple times during their lifetime. As a Board Member, I have focused much of my efforts on creating opportunities for our students to be able to pursue their passions through work based learning opportunities, career certifications and dual enrollment courses. These efforts have resulted in partnerships and MOUs with the local community college, Ft. Belvoir, Inova, small businesses and non-profits as well as expanding relationships with organizations that offer hands on experiences in the building trades.

I am proud to have received the endorsements of both teacher associations Fairfax Education Association and the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers, and the International Association of Fire Fighters.

Please help me to continue to fight for increasing pathways to opportunities for all of our students.

Support the Campaign

This is a community effort. Karen is here to represent you and your Mount Vernon family at the county level. Did you know that whenever Karen meets students from Kindergarten up that she always introduces herself the same way? She invariably tells constituents, young and old, "I work for you." You should see the wide eyes of the elementary school students when they hear that!

Your donation is an opportunity to be part of something bigger. Please support Karen in her re-election campaign. Give generously today!
